Taoism in Walden

Abstract

Thoreau’s masterpiece Walden reveals the meaning of human life. Walden presents plenty of eastern culture throughout the whole book. However, Taoism is the main ideology ran through the work. This paper attempts to present the connection between eastern culture--Taoism and Thoreau’s ideology, and makes a better understanding of Walden. Through the comparison from the aspects of nature-view and spiritual pursuit and the attitude towards society, we would have a full comprehension of the similarity and differences between Taoism and thought of Thoreau. These two ideologies offer us a guideline in our lives.
